Four seasons in a single day, layering as survival hack — the exact kit we wore across Song Kul, Kel-Suu, Issyk-Kul and Ala Archa.
Kyrgyzstan is famous for throwing all four seasons at you in a single day — and our trip proved it. Hot, sunny afternoons on lake shores followed by cold, windy evenings in the mountains. Layering was our biggest survival hack, since temperatures swung dramatically between Song Kul's high-altitude plateau and the warmer lowlands around Issyk-Kul.
Layering was everything
- Lightweight breathable t-shirts and quick-dry tops for hot daytime hours near Issyk-Kul and Ala Archa trails
- A fleece or light thermal layer for chilly Song Kul and Kel-Suu mornings and evenings
- A windproof, water-resistant jacket — we barely saw rain, but wind at altitude was constant
- Comfortable trekking pants that transition from lake walks to mountain hikes
- A warm beanie and gloves for surprise cold spells at higher elevations
- Sunglasses and a wide-brim hat or cap — sun exposure is intense at altitude even without heat
The single best tip for anyone planning a Kyrgyzstan trip: pack in layers, not for a single expected weather type.
Footwear — for lakes, trails and yurt stays
Between horseback rides at Song Kul, remote trekking to Kel-Suu, and short hikes in Ala Archa, footwear needed to handle rough, uneven terrain. Sturdy trekking shoes or waterproof hiking boots were essential, alongside a pair of comfortable slip-on sandals for relaxing at yurt camps in the evenings.
Gear for remote travel and yurt camping
Song Kul and Kel-Suu are remote, off-grid destinations with limited electricity and basic yurt-stay facilities — so we packed accordingly.
- Power bank (a big one)
- Headlamp or small torch
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser
- Basic first-aid kit
- Reusable water bottle — clean drinking water isn't always guaranteed at altitude
Essentials for sun, wind and dust
Because we mostly got dry, sunny days rather than rain, sun and dust protection mattered more than waterproofing. High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and a light scarf or buff (great for dust on the Kel-Suu route and wind at Song Kul) rounded out our daily essentials.
